I don't really know how the character of Pia Lindsey became central to the series. The stories can be read independently or together as each novel is a seperate story. The first time she appears is as a minor character in Nightingale Vale but psychotic sister of Graydon Lindsey just had something special. My intention in the first instance was to kill her off, then I thought, a strong female anti-hero would be a great subject for a series. I also like the idea of creating a character against type, something different. She has no apparent redeeming features but that is the facination.
In Nightingale Vale the whole story revolves around the Lindsey's as a dysfunctional and bizarre family driven by madness whose focus is on their innocent and niave tenant.
By the end of Nightingale Vale I saw that her subterfuge and talent for deception made her a brilliant character for a second book revolving entirely around her.
One of triplets, Her focus in life is to re-create her siblings. Emily, who she has ultimately destroyed and Graydon whom she has an unhealthy obsession with. In the new novel, she shifts her attention to a highschool and two pupils in particular as a replacement for her now deceased siblings.
In this particular novel Firebrand, I felt that it was important to allow the reader to get into the mind of Pia as she wreaks havoc on unsuspecting victims and the town they live in. Yet, it was also important to show that none of the characters really come out of the story smelling of roses.
Pia's skill is to ingratiate herself into innocent lives and expose the real characters hidden beneath the wholesome exteriors. I think Firebrand achieves that.
I am now working on a third book which features Pia, but this time in the UK, my resident home.
